Nutley HS softball team enjoys 4-0 start to season

NUTLEY – The Nutley High School varsity softball team defeated Livingston, Montclair and Cedar Grove in Super Essex Conference-American Division action to improve to a 4-0 record.

Senior shortstop Stefanie Ziemer had a single and triple and scored two runs and  senior third baseman Breanna DeMaio hit a two-run double spark the Raiders to a 5-4 win at Livingston on April 6.

Senior left-hander Emily Holden tossed a five-hitter, allowing an earned run and two walks, and striking out 10.

NHS blanked Montclair, 8-0, April 8, at Yanticaw Park. Holden fired a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. At the plate, Holden went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. DeMaio went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including a solo homer in the second inning to open the scoring. Senior left fielder Cassie Angelo went 2-for-3 with three runs and Ziemer scored two runs.

Samantha Eccheveria went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run; and Sydney Kunz and Stefanie Ziemer each went 1-for-3 with a run in the 4-0 win over Cedar Grove on April 11 at Yanticaw Park. Holden fired a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts. NHS scored two runs in the bottom of the first and two in the fourth. Cedar Grove had runners on second and third with none out in the seventh inning, but Holden retired the side, including striking out the final two batters to end the game.
