NUTLEY – Senior left-hander Emily Holden fired a three-hit shutout, striking out 10 with no walks to lead the Nutley High School varsity softball team to a 1-0 win over Mount Saint Dominic Academy, the No. 1-ranked team in the state, April 15 at Yanticaw Park.
Holden also had the Raiders’ lone hit of the game. Senior catcher Danielle Pomponio scored in the fifth inning after an error.
The Raiders were coming off a 2-1 heartbreaking loss to West Essex for their first defeat of the season. Mount Saint Dominic fell to a 4-1 record.
The Raiders then lost to Morris Knolls, 2-0 , April 16, in the NJ Pride/Essex County HS Softball Challenge at Seton Hall University to move to 5-2. Morris Knolls broke a scoreless tie with a two-run singe in the sixth inning.
NHS blanked Pequannock, 11-0, in a five-inning game in the Mount Saint Dominic Invitational on Sunday, April 17, in Caldwell. Holden struck out eight in firing a three-hit shutout.
Holden allowed two hits and two walks and struck out six in five innings in the 9-0 win at Bloomfield on April 18. Lauren Hogan had two doubles in three at-bats for the Raiders, who improved to a 7-2 record.
