Nutley HS track and field teams bring home 18 medals at Cedar Grove/Verona Relays

NUTLEY, NJ – The Nutley High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams enjoyed fine performances at the Cedar Grove/Verona Relays on Saturday, April 7.

The Raiders had a very successful day on the track and in the field, scoring a total of 18 medals.  Leading the charge for the Raiders were the boys’ and girls’ 4×800-meter relays teams, which claimed gold medals in their races. The boys’ team of Anish Kumar, Vinny Marinaro, Abhishek Dixit, and Brian McCormack crossed the line in 9:49.3 to claim gold. The girls’ team of Sam Gabrielle, Tiffany Miruelo, Isabel Lopez, and Gianna Marinaro took home the gold after a monster kick by Marinaro. The same quartet of girls took the silver medal in the sprint medley relay with a time of 5:15.

The boys’ SMR of Marinaro, Dixit, Alvin Briones, and Aiden Hamlin took home a fifth-place medal with a 4:21.1 clocking. In the lone individual event of the day, Brian McCormack ran a personal record 5:18.5 in the 1,600 to grab the third-place medal.

In the 2×400 hurdle relay, both the boys’ and girls’ took home third-place medals, as well as a sixth-place finish by the boys’ B team. The girls’ team of Shannon Granelli and Kaitlyn Gavaida clocked a 2:49.1 and the boys’ team of Aiden Hamlin and Zach Cagiao clocked a 2:22.5 for third place. The boys’ B team of Brian Grodzki and Raj Paghdal ran a combined 2:41 for sixth place. The girls’ 4×100 relay team of Jenna Hughes, Lindsey Moraski, Morgan DeFluri, and Maddie Seckler clocked a 1:00.3 to take home the third-place medal. The boys’ 4×200 team of Charlie Contini, Dom Raffaelli, Zach Cagiao, and Brian Grodzki covered the oval twice in 1:48.7 to grab a sixth-place medal.

In the final track event of the day, the 4×400 relay, the Raiders were able to grab medals. On the boys’ side, the A team of Kyle Schoch, Charlie Contini, Zach Cagiao, and Dom Raffaelli took third place with a time of 4:16.3.  On the girls’ side, the A team made up of Jaclyn Magill, Kaitlyn Gavaida, Lindsey Moraski, and Shannon Granelli took second in a time of 5:00.1, while the B team of Mia Eltzholtz, Rose Chrysoulakis, Emily Ostrowski, and Jenna Hughes was fourth in a time of 5:06.3.

In the field events, the Raiders were able to claim medals in the jumps as well as the throws.  The girls’ team of Gianna Searls and Patricia Ressel-Deras took fifth place in both the shot put and discus. The boys’ team of Zach Mackiewicz and Jimmy Martzen took second in the shot put at 61-5.5 and second place in the discus at 173-11. The girls’ long jump team of Isabel Lopez and Ava Intindola stretched the tape out to 21-10 to claim the fourth-place medal.

Next up for the Raiders is a double dual meet against West Essex and Orange High School on Thursday, April 12.
