NUTLEY – The Nutley High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will compete at the Super Essex Conference Championships on Saturday, May 14, at Schools Stadium.

At the Essex County Relay Championships, the boys’ team finished 11th out of 21 scoring teams in the boys’ team standings, and the girls’ team finished ninth out of 22 scoring teams in the girls’ team standings, at Livingston High School on Friday, May 6.

The boys took fifth in the 4×1,600-meter relay, fifth in the distance medley, fourth in the high jump relay, and third in the javelin relay.

The girls took fifth in the 4×800, sixth in the sprint medley relay, sixth in the long jump relay, third in the triple jump relay, third in the pole vault relay, and sixth in the discus relay.

The girls’ team braved the unseasonably cold temperatures, rain and wind.
The triple jump team of Jaela Small (32-2 personal record) and Sara McEnery (31-7.5 PR) combined for a 63-9.5 distance.
The pole vault team of Julia Yang (7-6 PR) and Danni Mannino (7-0 PR) combined for a 14-6.
The long jump team of Small (15-0) and Maisie Jelley (12-6.5) combined to finish in sixth place. Sofia Farrell launched a discus PR of 80-7 in the rain while relay partner Jenna Marino managed a 69-7 to grab the 6th place medal.

On the track, the 4×800 relay team of Shawna Lewis, Amanda Zheng, Justine Conca and Chloe Jelley fought off a anchor leg kick by Livingston to hold on for the fifth-place medal in a time of 10:32.33. The sprint medley team of the Jelley sisters, Small and Julia Eltzholtz scored a sixth-place medal with a 4:37.95 clocking.

On the boys’ side, coach Chris Bradley played a hunch with the weather and requested his javelin team of Tom Hanlon (122-8) and Frank Ferrara (125-1) moved into the first flight of throwers while it wasn’t raining.  The runway was already wet and slippery, but throwing before the rain started up again paid off for the Raiders as they wound up finishing third overall.  The high jump team of Silvan Sooksatan (5-9) and Giancarlo Padilla (5-6) combined to finish fourth overall.

The 4×1,600-meter relay team of Luke Michels, Sean Bartley, Eric Vogler, Jimmy Quinn ran a 18:54.02 which got them the fifth-place medal.  The distance medley team of Michels, Gerard Dimayuga, Matt Dasilva and Quinn also grabbed the fifth-place medal with a 11:13.38 clocking.

The Raiders hosted a meet against West Essex on Monday, May 9, at DeMuro Park field.
