Nutley HS wrestling team finishes sixth at Essex County Tournament

NUTLEY, NJ – The Nutley High School varsity wrestling team, under head coach Mike DiPiano, finished sixth in the team standings at the Essex County Tournament, Jan. 18-19, at Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange.

Frank DeMaio, Frank Gabriele and Joey D’Alessio each finished second in their respective weight classes to lead the Raiders. 

In the 160-pound final, third-seeded DeMaio was pinned by Seton Hall Prep’s Danny Young, the top seed, in 1:15. Gabriele, the top seed, lost by a 7-2 decision to Glen Ridge’s Joe Marchesano, the No. 2 seed, in the 170-pound final, while second-seeded D’Alessio lost by a 3-2 decision to top-seeded Steve Murphy of Caldwell in the 220-pound final.

Dominic Cofone and Justin Luna each finished third for Nutley. In the third-place consolation bouts, Cofone decisioned Orange’s Pierre Senat, 2-0, at the 113-pound class, while Luna won by forfeit over Columbia’s Hunter Dallision at the 195-pound class.

Other placewinners for the Raiders were Vin Nega, eighth place, at 106; Jacob Gonzalez, sixth place, at 126; and Luis Abreu, seventh place, at the 285-pound heavyweight class.

Seton Hall Prep won the team title for the third straight season.
