Rowan University softball freshman Carly Anderson named NJAC Rookie of the Year

NUTLEY – Rowan University freshman second baseman Carly Anderson, who is a Nutley High School graduate,  was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Softball Rookie of the Year, marking the second consecutive season that a Prof has garnered the top first-year player honor.

A Week 8 NJAC Rookie of the Week selection, Anderson finished her first NJAC season ranked tied for second in both conference-only runs (16) and conference-only hits (27). She also finished third in conference-only batting average (.450) and fourth in conference-only slugging percentage (.700).

Rowan University senior shortstop Shilah Snead, of Malaga, NJ and Delsea Regional, and Profs senior right-hander Beth Ann Hyland, of East Brunsick,  also have been named the NJAC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Year respectively for the 2016 season.

All three Rowan players were named to the All-NJAC first team. They were among seven Rowan players who earned All-NJAC honors.

Rowan won 4-0 over Kean University in the first round of the NJAC Championship Tournament on Wednesday, May 4.

The top-seeded Profs (33-8) play  fourth seed Ramapo College (21-14) on Friday, May 6, at 1 p.m.  The Roadrunners lost in the first round to the third seed The College of New Jersey, 7-1.  The other first round game between the second seed Stockton University and the fifth seed Rutgers-Camden was moved to Thursday, May 5.   

Rowan will host the remainder of the double elimination tournament on Friday-Sunday, May 6-8.  Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students, senior citizens and children.  The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
