NUTLEY – The 29th Annual Third Half Club “March Madness” Elementary School Basketball Tournament did not disappoint fans this year. It started off by welcoming back Good Shepherd to the the tournament, which lost a tough opening round game to eventual runner-up Washington School.
Washington was led by Nick Schroeder and David Barry throughout the tournament, but in the championship game, came across a stingy Yantacaw defense led by Mia Geraghty and her seven steals. Matthew Harbison was ice to close out the championship game by hitting three free throws to give Yantacaw a 23-20 win and their first championship in decades! Jake O’Connor hit two timely 3’s to keep Yantacaw in the game. This was after he hit a 3 the night before with 10 seconds left to beat a feisty Spring Garden team. Olivia Real and Jonathan Velez added four points each for Yantacaw to go along with their tenacious play on defense.
In the consolation game, Spring Garden was able to hold off Good Shepherd for third place behind the shooting of Matt Pergola and Mackenzie Albert.
All in all, the boys and girls of Nutley played their hearts out over the weekend and gave their parents, friends and supporters great memories. The THC thanks all those who continue to support the children and the great community we reside in!
