ORANGE, NJ – The Orange High School varsity football team got back on the winning track with an impressive all-around effort.
Senior fullback Jair McClary and junior wide receiver Nyquee Hawkins delivered a strong 1-2 offensive punch and the Tornado defense put forth a stifling performance during a 19-0 win over Barringer on Saturday afternoon at Bell Stadium.
With the win, the Tornadoes snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-3.
McClary rushed for 185 yards and two TDs on 15 carries while Hawkins ran for 130 yards and a score on 17 attempts.
After a scoreless first quarter, Hawkins ran for a 26-yard TD to give the Tornadoes a 6-0 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, McClary scored on a 3-yard run, followed by senior Louis Thompson’s extra point kick, to make it 13-0.
McClary ran for a 15-yard TD in the fourth quarter to ice the game.
Junior quarterback George Crespo rushed 10 times for 20 yards and completed 1 of 3 passes for 33 yards. Senior wide receiver Michael Pennix had the reception. Pennis also had six tackles and an interception as a defensive back
Defensively, Hawkins had eight tackles as a defensive back; senior linebacker Mahkye Boswell had seven tackles; senior end Nasir Givens had five tackles with three sacks; senior tackle Joshua Fields had five tackles with one sack; Thompson had four tackles and two interceptions as a defensive back; senior DB Zekoriah Kirkland had four tackles; and senior DB Askari Garner added three tackles.
Barringer lost its second straight to fall to 2-3.
The Tornadoes will visit a surging Nutley team on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. Nutley has won its last two games, beating Irvington, 34-12, at home and Paramus, 27-22, on the road to improve to 2-3. Irvington was ranked No. 15 in the state at the time. Orange defeated Nutley, 36-29, last season at home.
OHS then will host Parsippany Hills on Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.. Parsippany Hills improved to 5-0 after beating Jefferson, 35-7, at home. In 2014, Orange lost to Parsippany Hills, 35-34, at Parsippany Hills in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 3 playoffs. Parsippany Hills went on to win the state section title that season. The Tornadoes last season lost at Parsippany Hills, 23-13.
