Orange HS girls’ basketball team enjoys routs to advance in Essex County Tournament

ORANGE – Imani Paul scored 14 points and Imani May had 13 points to lead the Orange High School girls’ varsity basketball team to a 55-13 home win over North Star Academy in the Essex County Tournament first preliminary round on Feb. 6.

Lorenzia Hammer had nine points for the 13th-seeded Lady Tornadoes, who snapped a two-game losing streak. North Star was seeded 32nd.

The Tornadoes defeated 20th-seeded Arts, 56-33, in the second preliminary round on Feb. 8 at home. Hammer had 25 points, 14 rebounds and four steals; and May had 23 points and 10 steals. OHS, which moved to a 12-6 record, will visit fourth-seeded Shabazz in Newark in the first round on Feb. 13.

In previous action, Paul scored 12 points, but the Tornadoes lost at Livingston, 36-33, Feb. 2. OHS trailed 17-6, before outscoring Livingston, 10-4, in the second quarter and 11-3 in the third quarter for a 27-24 lead. But Livingston answered with 12-6 fourth quarter.

May scored 14 points in the 52-26 home loss to Bloomfield on Feb. 4.
