ORANGE, NJ – On Wednesday, April 12, Orange resident Kayla Wilson officially signed her athletic agreement to attend and play volleyball for Georgian Court University, located in Lakewood, N.J.
The 17-year-old senior at the St. Vincent Academy in Newark has been playing volleyball since her sophomore year. At the conclusion of her first season, Wilson sought out additional training with Coach Eddie Grant at the Newark YMCA. Coach Grant encouraged her to try out for the Sure Shots Volleyball club. As a member of the high school varsity team and the Sure Shots Volleyball Club, several local and out-of-state colleges recruited her to play volleyball.
In addition to being an athlete, Wilson is also a member of the National Honor Society, and is an Honor Student.
St. Vincent Academy is an all-girls’ high school in Newark that has served the greater Newark Area for more than 90 years by providing young women with a strong academic foundation and opportunities to serve the community through service programs.
Saint Vincent Academy promotes the strength and diversity of today’s young woman by demonstrating that an Honor Student can also be an athlete.
While the school is not known for its athletic programs, Wilson has worked hard to become a distinguished athlete. She is the recipient of the 2017 National Girls and Women in Sports award representing St. Vincent Academy, and the Super Essex Conference Girls Volleyball First Team for the Freedom Division.
After visiting several colleges and universities, and meeting with coaches during Volleyball Club competitions, showcases and tournaments, Wilson decided to play for Georgian Court University. She will graduate from St. Vincent Academy in June, and will report to her new school in August for training and conditioning.
Wilson is a lifelong resident of Orange where she lives with her parents Rev. Niles and Mrs. LaTosha Wilson and her sister Alyssa, who is a junior at Monmouth University.
