ORANGE – Jamar Summers, a sophomore cornerback for the University of Connecticut football team, was named First Team All-American Athletic Conference as the league announced its postseason honors on Wednesday, Dec. 1.
Summers, an Orange High School graduate, led the American Athletic Conference in interceptions with seven during the regular season, which also placed him tied for third nationally and tied for fifth in interceptions per game. Summers made 37 tackles on the year and had three pass-breakups.
Summers recorded critical interceptions in UConn’s last three wins of the season, which made the Huskies bowl-eligible for the first time since 2010. In the win versus East Carolina on Oct. 30, he had two, with the first coming in the closing seconds of the first half with ECU driving as Summers intercepted the ball at the Huskies’ 8-yard line. His second interception came late in the fourth quarter in the Huskies’ end zone. Summers returned a pick 67 yards for a touchdown in the win against Tulane on Sept. 7, UConn’s only score in a 7-3 win.
UConn (6-6 record) will face Marshall (9-3) in the St. Petersburg Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 26, at Tropicana Field in St. Peterburg, Fla.
