MAPLEWOOD and SOUTH ORANGE – The 11U Red South Orange-Maplewood Cougars Travel baseball team kicked off their summer season by winning their third straight Memorial Day tournament championship. This year the team participated in the Mount Olive Memorial Day tournament, and in a span of four days, finished with a record of 4-1-1, including two victories on Memorial Day to capture the title.
In the final game of the tournament, the championship game, the young Cougars were able to avenge their only loss of the weekend by stunning Wayne PAL in a comeback that had all attention of the tournament on their game. Down 7-3 heading into the top of the fifth inning, the Cougars would “seize the moment” and rally off 11 runs, taking a 14-7 lead into the sixth inning and never looking back. Using timely hitting, precise base-running, and a stellar defense, the Cougars once again made their mark on the Memorial Day weekend.
The team will begin summer league play the week of June 13, and will also participate in the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken League district tournament beginning June 25 in Westfield.
For those who wish to meet the boys or offer congratulations, on the morning of June 11, the team will be conducting a bake sale fund-raiser in Maplewood and South Orange Villages to support a trip to Cooperstown in the summer of 2017.
