Columbia girls fencing team advanced to state quarterfinals

MAPLEWOOD/SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — The fourth-seeded Columbia High School girls fencing team defeated 13th-seeded West Windsor-Plainsboro North High School, 16-11, in the round of 16 of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s state team tournament on Thursday, Feb. 15, at home.

Senior Julia Wheeler went 2-1 in saber. Senior Mei Lee and junior Charlotte Song each went 3-0 and junior Sydney Anrig went 2-0 in foil. Junior Dillina Oraedu went 2-0 and junior Sarla Lyengar went 2-1 in epee.

The Cougars, who won their 10th straight match and improved to 12-1 on the season, were scheduled to host No. 12 seed Livingston High School in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Feb. 21. The winner will face either No. 1 seed Chatham High School or No. 8 seed Morris Catholic in the semifinals on Tuesday, Feb. 27. 

Columbia was looking to avenge a 16-11 loss to Livingston back on Dec. 16.
