Columbia HS baseball team falls to Millburn in state tournament first round

MAPLEWOOD, NJ (updated Tuesday May 30, 12:29 p.m.) – The 16th-seeded Columbia High School varsity baseball team lost at top-seeded Millburn, 2-1, in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2, Group 4 state tournament May 23 in Millburn.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead on Luke Jackson’s two-out RBI double in the top of the first inning. Millburn scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and held on for the win.

Columbia lost to Millburn in all four meetings this season. They dropped 9-0 decisions in Super Essex Conference-American Division meetings, and fell, 5-4, in the Greater Newark Tournament semifinals May 15.

The Cougars won their next two games. CHS defeated Livingston, 9-6, May 26, in Livingston in a divisional game. Christian Pierre went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI; Daniel Cotler went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI; Jackson went 1-for-2 with two RBI; and Rowan Marbury went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

CHS beat Bloomfield, 8-3, Saturday, May 27, at Underhill Field in a divisional game. Jackson went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and three RBI; Eliot Dix went 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and an RBI; Pierre went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and and RBI; and Reid Evans had an RBI for the Cougars, who moved to a 12-12 record.

The Cougars were scheduled to visit Newark Academy in Livingston on May 31 and host Verona on June 1 in the season finale, both in Super Essex Conference-American Division play.
