Columbia HS baseball team falls to MKA in the GNT first round

MAPLEWOOD – The fifth-seeded Columbia High School varsity baseball team lost to 12th-seeded Montclair Kimberley Academy, 7-5, in the first round of the Greater Newark Tournament on Monday, May 9, at Underhill Field.

The Cougars led 4-1, but MKA scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh for a 7-4 lead. CHS scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but came up short to move to a 10-6 record.

Mike Nitti went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and two runs; Christian Pierre went 2-for-4 with two runs; and Quinn Krais and Luke Jackson each went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Cougars.

In their previous game, Krais went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI; Ryan Davis went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Eliot Dix homered and drove in two runs in an 8-4 home win over Belleville on May 4 in a Super Essex Conference non-divisional game. Reid Evans went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Pierre scored two runs for the Cougars.
