Columbia HS baseball team reaches GNT quarterfinals

MAPLEWOOD, NJ – Luke Jackson went 3-for-3 with two homers, a double, five RBI and three runs scored to lead the fifth-seeded Columbia High School varsity baseball team to an 11-1 home win over No. 21 seed North 13th St. Tech in the first round of the Greater Newark Tournament on Saturday, May 5 at Underhill Field.

The Cougars will visit fourth-seeded Nutey in the GNT quarterfinals on May 10. Columbia lost to Nutley earlier this season, 11-5, April 14, at Underhill Field.

The winner will face the winner between top-seeded and five-time defending champion Seton Hall Prep and eighth-seeded Cedar Grove in the semifinals on May 12 at Verona HS.

Eliot Dix went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and two runs and Phil Whitney drove in two runs for the Cougars, who improved to 10-5 with their sixth straight win.

Palmer Krais pitched a five-inning one-hitter, allowing an unearned run and striking out four.

The Cougars defeated Barringer, 18-1, May 2, at Underhill Field in a Super Essex Conference crossover game. Jackson went 3-for-3 with a double and five RBI; Rowan Marbury was 1-for-2 with two RBI; Whitney was 1-for-1 with three runs and an RBI; Dix was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run; and Jake Lefferts was 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.

John DelGreco pitched a five-inning shutout with eight strikeouts and also went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the 10-0 win over Dickinson on May 4 in Jersey City.

Dix went 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBI; Jackson homered and drove in two runs; and Aidan Mayberry went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
