Columbia HS boys’ basketball team enjoys good start to season

MAPLEWOOD, NJ – The Columbia High School boys’ varsity basketball team has enjoyed a good start to the season.

Zayon Marsh had 15 points and eight rebounds and Russell Ayala had 11 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds as the Cougars won their second straight game to start the season with a 65-54 home win over Montclair on Dec. 19.

Darius Plummer had 11 points and seven rebounds and Breizh Askew and Nashiem Harte each had 10 points for the Cougars.

Justin Bobbitt contributed five points and six rebounds and Rakim Perry added three points in the win.

CHS lost at Newark East Side, 74-57, Dec. 21, for its first defeat of the season. Harte had 16 points and Askew had 11. Bobbitt and Marsh each had nine points.

The Cougars participated in the Union City Holiday tournament. In  the opener on Dec. 27, CHS lost to Orange, 55-38.

The Cougars then defeated Great Oaks Charter, 90-36, in the consolation on Dec. 29. Harte scored 19 points and Askew had 13 points, nine rebounds, five steals and four assists for the Cougars, who improved to 3-2. Luke Hayes scored 11 points with three 3-pointers; Tucker Arnold had eight points and seven rebounds; Justin Bobbitt scored eight points; Ayala recorded seven points and three assists; and Dylan Jones had six points. Marcus Cosmeus and Brandon Dalembert each had five points; Marsh contributed four points and Jun Hariman and Noah Perry each had two points.
