Columbia HS boys’ soccer team advances in ECT

MAPLEWOOD, NJ (updated Tuesday Oct. 18, 3:35 p.m.)  – Ryan Perlee and Van Brantley each had a goal to lead the 13th-seeded Columbia High School boys’ varsity soccer team to a 2-0 win over No. 25 seed Orange in the second preliminary round of the Essex County Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 15, at CHS Ritzer Field.

Goalie Sam Maidenberg had an assist while making five saves. Stevie Feinman-Riordan also had an assist for the Cougars, who moved to a 6-7-1 record and will visit fourth-seeded Montclair in the first round on Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals on Oct. 22 against either fifth-seeded Livingston, No. 12 Caldwell or No. 21 Science. Columbia received a bye in the first preliminary round.

In earlier action, Julian Lyons scored the game-winning goal on a header to lift the Cougars, 2-1, over Central on Oct. 11 at Ritzer Field.

Alex Lauder had the other goal, while Joe Dente and Rashid Peart each had an assist for the Cougars. Maidenberg made eight saves.

CHS lost a 1-0 heartbreaker at Newark Academy on Oct. 13 in Livingston.
