Columbia HS boys’ soccer team jolts Central; seeks ECT success

MAPLEWOOD, NJ – The Columbia High School boys’ varsity soccer team defeated Newark Central, 4-2, Oct. 10 at CHS’ Ritzer Field.

Columbia striker “CJ” Jones scored off a header on a set piece to take a 1-0 lead. Abraham Lomax answered for Central shortly before halftime. Columbia freshman Charlie Herley scored off a rebound in the 60th minute to which Central promptly replied to even the game at 2-2. Alex Cole gave Columbia the lead minutes later off an assist from Herley. Leading the game 3-2, Columbia goalie Sam Maidenberg blocked a penalty kick and Vincent Zakian finished off the scoring in extra time to give Columbia a wild 4-2 win.

In previous action, CHS fell to East Side, 1-0, Oct. 8 at Ironbound field.

CHS was awarded the No. 9 seed in the Essex County Tournament and was scheduled to host either No. 24 East Orange or No. 25 Barringer in the preliminary third round on or by Oct. 16. The winner will advance to the round of 16 at No. 8 seed Glen Ridge on or by Oct. 18. The quarterfinals are Oct. 20.
