UPDATE: Columbia HS girls’ basketball team defeats 20-win Newark Academy team

MAPLEWOOD – The Columbia High School girls’ varsity basketball team defeated a strong Newark Academy team, 50-45, Feb. 18 at South Orange Middle School.

Dominique Rayam scored 17 points and Shadekay Haughton had 12 points for the Lady Cougars, who handed Newark Academy its second loss of the season. Newark Academy moved to a 20-2 record.

The Cougars led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and 23-16 at halftime. CHS extended the lead to 41-29 after three quarters.

Kayla Anderson had six points; Courtney Miller had five and Jasmine West had four for CHS.

The Cougars then lost at Irvington, 38-31, Feb. 20. Rayam led all scorers with 20 points.

Anderson hit a free throw with no time left in overtime to lift CHS to a 39-38 home win over Pope John on Feb. 22. Anderson finished with two points. Rayam had 15 points; Haughton and Miller each had seven points and Melissa Etienne had six for CHS, which improved to an 8-16 record.
