MAPLEWOOD, NJ – For the fifth straight season, the Columbia High School girls’ fencing team advanced to the NJSIAA state team tournament championship meet, which will be held Feb. 21 at Morris Hills HS in Rockaway.
The 11th-seeded Cougars will face top-seeded Bergen Tech in a rematch of last year’s state final won by Bergen Tech.
Columbia defeated second-seeded Ridge, 15-12, in the semifinals Feb. 15.
Columbia has won a record 12 state titles, all since 1998. They won four straight from 1998-2001 and four straight from 2003-06. The other titles came in 2008, 2012, 2014, and 2015. Columbia lost to Montgomery in the 2016 final.
Meanwhile, the CHS boys’ team, seeded seventh, lost to second-seeded St. Peter’s Prep in the boys’ state team tournament semifinals on Feb. 14.
