UPDATED: Columbia HS indoor tracksters enjoy success at Group 4 state championships

Columbia’s Gianna Green took third in high jump and sixth in hurdles to advance once again to the Meet of Champions.

MAPLEWOOD/SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — Columbia High School seniors Madison Stevens, Gianna Green and Mae Dowling enjoyed stellar performances at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Group 4 girls indoor track and field state championships at the John Bennett Athletic Sports Bubble in Toms River on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Stevens took second place in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 9.75 inches. 

Green took third place in the high jump at 5 feet, 4 inches. Green also took sixth place in 55-meter hurdles in 8.63 seconds. 

Columbia’s Mae Dowling ran a personal-best in the 1600 en route to her third Meet of Champions.

In the 1,600-meter run, Dowling took seventh place in 5 minutes, 11.27 seconds and CHS sophomore Keira Monagle was 15th in 5:19.47.

CHS sophomore Riley Rucker took 17th place in the 3,200-meter run in 11:56.08.

On the boys side for CHS, senior Henry Cooper was 12th in the 400-meter dash in 51.58, senior Zhamir Rowan was 19th in the 55-meter hurdles and the 4×400-meter relay team was 12th in 3:32.00.

The Group 4 state meet consisted of the top-six finishers in each event from the sectional meets.

The top-three finishers in each event and the next 12 best finishers in each event from all the group meets have qualified for the NJSIAA Meet of Champions on Sunday, March 3, at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility on Staten Island, N.Y.

Columbia’s Madison Stevens took second in shot put to advance to the Meet of Champions.

The qualifiers for the Meet of Champions are Stevens in the shot put, Green in the high jump and 55-meter hurdles, Dowling in the 1,600-meter run and the boys 4×400-meter relay team. Rowan and freshman Jalele Williams also qualified in the boys long jump, but those results will not be finalized until the end of the month, said CHS head coach Alex Simon.
