MAPLEWOOD, NJ – The Columbia High School varsity softball team has enjoyed a strong 3-0 start to the season.
Alexa Stephan went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two RBI and fellow sophomore Hudson Hassler went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run as the Columbia High School varsity softball team defeated Newark East Side, 10-0, April 9, in its season opener at Meadowland Park.
Senior Sophie Goldman walked three times and scored three runs; and sophomore Paige Carlson, sophomore Claire Salinardo and senior Clementine Sherman each drove in a run. Jordan Stephan struck out six over three hitless innings for the win and fellow senior Catherine John pitched two innings of one-hit ball with six strikeouts.
The Cougars defeated Westfield, 8-7, April 10, at Meadowland Park. Trailing 7-6, Columbia scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Alexa Stephan went 3-for-3 with four RBI; Jordan Stephan went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs; Goldman went 3-for-4 with three runs; and sophomore Hudson Hassler had two hits. Jordan Stephan pitched a complete game for the win.
The Cougars defeated Millburn, 12-6, April 11, in Millburn. CHS scored six runs in the top of the seventh to break a 6-6 tie. Hassler had three hits, including a homer, with five RBI; Salinardo went 4-for-5 with three runs; John went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI; and sophomore Lucy Gagne, Carlson and Alexa Stephan each had an RBI.
