WEST ORANGE, NJ — Tyson Carroll and Cahil Love Jr. each finished second place in their respective weight classes to lead the Columbia High School wrestling team at the 45th Essex County Tournament at Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange Jan. 16-17.
Carroll, a sophomore, and Love, a senior, pulled off upsets in the semifinals. Carroll, seeded fourth, decisioned Bloomfield’s Zachary Andruchowitz, the No. 1 seed, by a 3-2 score, while Love, seeded third, pinned Livingston’s Agostino Petrillo, the No. 2 seed, in 1:28.
In the finals, Carroll was pinned by Wes Essex’s Samuel Carsillo, the No. 3 seed, in 4:46, while
Love dropped a tough 4-3 double-overtime decision to West Essex’s Carson Barry, the top seed.
Fernando Sainlouis took eighth place for the Cougars in the 145-pound weight class, losing to Millburn’s Francesco Merolli by pin in 2:40 in the seventh-place consolation.
The Cougars finished 13th overall among the 21 scoring teams. Seton Hall Prep won the team title for the fifth straight season.
