Maia Little, Gia Gillens key Columbia HS girls basketball team’s victory over West Essex

MAPLEWOOD, NJ – Maia Little scored 20 points and Gia Gillens had seven points to lead the Columbia High School girls varsity basketball team to a 44-34 home win over West Essex in a Super Essex Conference crossover game on Jan. 31. Kaijhe Hall and Ashley Phillip each had six points; Sage Cleghorn hit a three-pointer and Vida Poyner added two points as the Cougars improved to a 6-10 record.

In earlier action, Courtney Provilon-Louis had 13 points and Sage Cleghorn had 10 points to lead Columbia  to a 41-29 win at Millburn, Jan. 24 in a SEC-Liberty Division game. Little had eight points; Kaijhe Hall had six points and Poyner and Svea Wickelgren each had two points for Columbia, which snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Cougars then fell to Newark Collegiate Academy, 52-43, Jan. 29 at home in a divisional game. Gillens had 11 points; Provilon-Louis had 10 points; Cleghorn had seven points; Little had six points and Vida Poyner added five points. Kaijhe Hall chipped in two points.

The Cougars, seeded No. 16, hope to avenge that loss to Newark Collegiate in the preliminary third round of the Essex County Tournament on or by Feb. 7. Newark Collegiate is the No. 17 seed. Columbia defeated Newark Collegiate, 48-38, Jan. 8 in the first divisional meeting.

The winner of CHS and NC will visit No. 1 seed and two-time defending champion Newark Tech in the first round (round of 16) Feb. 9.
