Mason Toye thrives for Minnesota United soccer

In his second year, South Orange native surges for MLS team

Mason Toye has been red-hot for Minnesota United FC of Major League Soccer.

In his first start of the season in Week 18, the 20-year-old South Orange native scored two goals to help Minnesota United rally for a 3-2 road win over Montreal Impact on July 6.

In the team’s next game, Toye scored the lone goal in the 1-0 home win over Dallas on July 13 at Allianz Field. It was his fourth goal of the season.

In the following game, Toye, in his second start, had an assist on Minnesota’s goal in the 1-1 tie with Real Salt Lake on July 20 on the road.

Minnesota played Vancouver to a scoreless tie on July 27 at Allianz Field to move to a 10-5-7 mark.

Toye recorded his first career goal and also had an assist on June 29 in the 7-1 win over Cincinnati. In the next game, he had an assist in the 3-1 win over San Jose on July 3.

Following his freshman season at Indiana University in 2017 in which he scored 10 goals and was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Toye was the No. 7 overall selection by the Minnesota United in the 2018 MLS Draft.

In his rookie season last year, Toye made 17 appearances with two starts, picking up an assist.

Toye was named First Team All-American by USA Today and First Team All-American by Top Drawer Soccer during his career Seton Hall Prep in West Orange. He also was the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year in his senior year in the fall 2015.

Minnesota United will host the Portland Timbers on Sunday, August 4, at 3 p.m. on ESPN.
