CALDWELL – In the type of interesting irony which pretty much only occurs in the world of sports, two girls’ basketball battalions which, just a few years ago, drew packed houses when they collided, will meet in much less ballyhooed fashion when 0-10 Mount Saint Dominic Academy plays host to 0-7 Bloomfield Tech at 4 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 14, in the Mary Jo Codey Gym in the MSDA Athletics Center.
The good news is that, since there are no ties in cagers clubs competition, one team has to get its first victory of the season. The bad news is that one of the two teams will leave the court still looking for its first victory of the current campaign.
“We’re getting closer to our first win, because our girls are playing better,” noted longtime Mount head hoops honcho Jerry Aquino. “To be honest, we’re more concerned that our girls learn the correct way to play basketball than we are abouts wins and losses.
“But, as this group of girls continues to learn to play the correct way, they get closer to winning and will do so, sooner or later.”
Over the past fortnight, the Lady Lions have lost at Millburn, 37-24, on Jan. 4, to Nutley, 44-34, on Jan. 7, to Paramus Catholic, 52-32, on the ninth, and, most recently, to perennial power Shabazz, 50-43, on Tuesday night, Jan. 12.
Among the stats leaders for the locals are Grace Sheehan, a junior frontcourter from Fairfield who is averaging eight points and 4.5 caroms collected per contest, fellow 11th-grader Catherine Szeluga, a 5-7 junior shooting guard from Verona who is averaging 5.1 points, 3.1 boards and two thefts per tilt, and Alyse Jefferson, a 5-6 junior point guard from Lafayette, who is adding an average of five points, 2.1 assists and two takeaways per tussle.
Bloomfield Tech, which plays its home games at the West Caldwell Tech campus on Passaic Ave., has most recently been beaten by University High, 70-23, on Jan. 5, and Montclair High, 57-37, on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
