Nutley/Columbia ice hockey team advances to McMullen Cup championship game

NUTLEY, – Senior Joe Melillo had four goals and freshman Rocco Albanese had two goals and one assist to lead the top-seeded Nutley/Columbia high school ice hockey team to a 10-0 win over fourth-seeded West Orange in the semifinals of the McMullen Cup playoffs, Monday, Feb. 11, at Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange.

Nutley/Columbia, which snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 11-5-3 record, will face second-seeded Frisch in the championship game Saturday, Feb. 16, at Codey Arena at 8 p.m.

Senior Melanie Conca had one goal and one assist; sophomore Cooper Fojas, Columbia sophomore James Gonon and freshman Paul Poplawski each had a goal; senior Isabel Fontanals, freshman Frank Matrona and Columbia senior Eli Verdun each had two assists; freshman CJ Hannon had one assist; and senior goalie Johnny Matrona made 30 saves.
