SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The Our Lady of Sorrows cross-country team racked up seven medals while taking fourth against 15 other schools at the 20th Annual Assumption School Championship at Loantaka Park in Morris County.
Not only is this the largest OLS cross-country team, but the best in 12 years.
Maudie-Grace Lomuchio opened with a sixth-place finish among the Third Grade Girls, followed by Isabel Sabnekar, who just missed a medal. Lori Kola and Zenya Stewart-Mitchell also ran well. For the Third Grade Boys, Aidan Benjamin fought to a 10th-place finish while Matthew Donohue surprised everyone with his strong finish.
Competing in the Girls Fifth and Sixth Grade division, Emma Torres overcame a slow start to finish a solid ninth in a field of 63 girls. Amelia Benjamin placed 15th. Molly Donohue had a very strong finish and Gwen Oakley ran significantly better than last year. All three girls are fifth-graders. For the boys, sixth-grader Jared Edwards was out-maneuvered, but still managed a second-place, while sixth-grade newcomer Pat Kenny showed real promise. Aryan Sabnekar, a fifth-grader, handled the much longer course very well.
The best OLS race of the day featured Ajamo Carraby-Jones’ third place and Nick Torres’ sixth place in the featured Boys Seventh and Eighth Grade race covering 1.6 miles.
The youngsters in the Second Grade and Under blew out the field in the Fun Run with Joe Schmidt finishing first; Brendan McKeon, and the Dunmeyer twins, Alfonso and Rafael, all finishing in the top ten; and strong efforts from second-graders Caylee Brice and Christina Paul; first-graders Mary Kola and Peter Dio; and kindergarteners Mikayla Brice and Maximillian Williams.
