SOUTH ORANGE, NJ — There could be no better day for cross-country than Saturday, Oct. 2, when 13 teams gathered for the 22nd Annual Fall Festival held at the legendary Flood’s Hill course, the home of the Himalayas! As expected, the large, experienced teams of Saint James, Saint Elizabeth and Our Lady of Mount Carmel dominated, but OLS, small with a large majority of novices, gave a very good account of themselves.

In only her second race, Kendrick Conway set out to win, but after leading the 3rd grade girls’ race, she was forced to settle for second. Anouk Lomuscio moved to ninth, a big improvement over last week. In the boys’ race, Gianluca Ravana improved four places over last week to grab 10th, while Griffin McShane surprised the OLS staff with a solid finish after a long absence. Watch this group in the near future.

While OLS had no 4th-graders, there was improvement in the boys’ 5th & 6th grades races with Marcus Williams moving to 14th and Sam Chalk to 22nd in a larger field. It might be said that there was no bigger improvement than Lorenzo Torasso as his steady approach has paid huge dividends.

The team saved its fireworks for the 7th & 8th Grade races! Millie Williams, in her second race, led a nervous first-timer Nora D’Andrea to the finish, taking 15th and 16th. Both are seventh-graders. Maudy Grace Lomuscio and Isabel Sabnekar made strong finishes as well. Two seventh-grade boys, Joe Schmidt and Alfonso Dunmeyer, made a big impact last week, taking sixth and seventh. Add Rafaelo Dunmeyer this week and they finished in sixth, seventh and eighth, dominating the scoring in their division.

The future looks promising, too, as Caleb Dean and Alessandro Ravano took first and second in the “Fun Run.”

The team travels to the Saint Elizabeth Invitational in two weeks.
