MAPLEWOOD, NJ – Despite water everywhere, a couple of downed trees, horses and bicycles, the Our Lady of Sorrows cross-country team opened some eyes at the 22nd annual Assumption Invitational, beginning with an exciting second-place finish by Bella Borde in the first event of the day, the girls’ 3rd grade race at 6/10th of a mile.
Not to be outdone, Christopher Schmidt also placed second in the boys’ 3rd grade race and that was followed by Joseph Schmidt’s fifth place and Brendan McKeown’s eighth place in the boys’ 4th grade race.
Fifth graders Isabel Sabnekar and Maudie Grace Lomuscio placed 10th and 11th in the girls’ 5th & 6th event over a 1.4 mile course. Jared Edwards rounded out the scoring with a solid third place in the Boys’ 7th & 8th event.
The “Fun Run” for second graders-and-under turned out to be just that as Anouk Lomuscio ran from start to finish with a big smile on her face.
Although not scoring, strong performances came from Mary Kola, Peter Dio, Molly Donohue and Aryan Sabnekar, while Emma Torres and Halle Jules showed signs of a strong recovery from some early season injuries.
Overall, the team finished fifth among 14 schools. They are expecting a better result this Saturday, October 6, when the 19th Annual OLS Fall Classic will be held at Flood’s Hill, featuring the famous “Himalayas” of South Orange.
