Our Lady of Sorrows cross-country team inches closer to school record for medals in a season

MAPLEWOOD, NJ – Inclement weather caused the Saint Mary’s Prep “Spooktacular” to be held a day later, causing a reduction in the number of competitors, but no reduction in excitement as the Our Lady of Sorrows’ cross-country team won five medals. With 34 medals and one more meet to go, the team has a good chance of breaking the team’s season record of 37.

The Dunmeyer brothers opened the OLS scoring with Alfonso scoring 5th and Rafael, 13th on the one-mile Scarecrow course for the 3rd & 4th graders. Isabel Sabnekar and Maudie Grace Lomuscio followed with 3rd and 4th finishes over the 1.2 mile “Mummy” course for 5th & 6th graders.

While both girls have regularly scored in the top 10 this season, it was the first time they both scored in the top five! The final medal went to Jared Edwards, 7th over the 1.9 mile “Pumpkin” course for 7th & 8th graders.

Some personal goals were met as Alfonso and Rafael scored well enough to qualify for the All-League first and second teams. Maudie Grace also won first team honors and Isabel is only one more race away from joining her. Jared qualified for first team honors for the sixth straight year while winning more medals than anyone in the history of OLS cross country.

Bella Borde, Mary Kola, Peter Dio, Tyler Craig, Aryan Sabnekar and Molly Donohue also met the “horrors” of the various courses, very successfully.

The final meet of the season will be hosted next week by Saint John the Apostle of Clark at Oak Ridge Park.
