SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The 17th Our Lady of Sorrows (OLS) Annual Fall Classic Cross-Country meet was held recently.
There was plenty to cheer for the home team as Ajamo Carraby-Jones from OLS blew the field wide-open with a victory in the Varsity Seventh and Eighth Grades Boys race. It was the first OLS victory in this event in 10 years. Another OLS stalwart, Nick Torres, was fourth. Other OLS medalists were Emma Torres, a fifth-grader, in the Fourth and Fifth Girls race, and Joe Schmidt, only a second-grader, who placed 10th in the Third and Fourth Boys race.
Strong efforts were posted by Patrick Kenny and Aryan Sabnekar in the Fifth and Sixth Boys race and Amelia Benjamin, Molly Donohue and Gwen Oakley in the Girls race. All but Patrick are fifth-graders.
The Third and Fourth Boys’ and Girls’ teams may be the strongest OLS has ever had. Isabel Sabnekar and Maudi Grace Lomuscio led the group, both missing medals but placing very well against third- and fourth-graders. It didn’t help that Maudi Grace fell early in the race. Third-graders Zenya Stewart-Mitchell and Lori Kola followed. For the boys, third-grader Alfonso Dunmeyer’s 23rd, Aiden Benjamin’s 25th and Rafaelo Dunmeyer’s 32nd backed Joe Schmidt’s effort. Add Matt Donohue and Parker Hamilton and this team could be among the league leaders in the next two years. Parker is a fourth-grader, Aiden is a third-grader, and the rest are second-graders.
OLS scores at the Morris County Catholic Championships
With three more medals, the OLS cross-country team shattered the team season record with 30, won by nine different individuals at the Morris County Catholic Championships. Ajamo Carraby-Jones took another second in the Varsity Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grades race and sixth-grader Jared Edwards shook off a lingering illness to take sixth. Emma Torres, a fifth-grader, picked up the third medal with a ninth-place in the JV Third, Fourth and Fifth race.
Patrick Kenny got his first taste of the Varsity and the sixth-grader responded with a solid middle-of-the-pack performance. This bodes well because most of the competitors were seventh- and eighth-graders.
The girls’ JV team, probably the youngest in the field, took fourth. Following Emma, Amelia Benjamin was 18th. Molly Donohue had another solid performance, as did Isabel Sabnekar, Maudy Grace Lomuscio and Gwen Oakley. All of them are fifth-graders except for Isabel and Maudy Grace, who are second-graders.
The boys’ JV team was almost as strong. Led by Aiden Benjamin and Alfonso Dunmeyer and followed by Aryan Sabnekar and Matt Donohue, they needed only one more boy for a full team. However, they marked OLS as a team contender next year.
So, the season has ended. Qualifying for First Team League Honors are: Ajamo Carraby-Jones, Nick Torres and Jared Edwards. Second team honors went to Emma Torres and Maudy Grace Lomuscio.
