SOUTH ORANGE – The Our Lady of Sorrows of South Orange track and field team started its season at the Union Catholic meet.
In a bit of a surprise, OLS slipped past perennial champion Good Shepherd of Irvington to win, 146-142. It was OLS’ first win at this meet and the first championship win in 10 years. Saint Thomas of Bloomfield was third. In all, there were 23 clubs and teams and it was the season opener for most of the schools.
OLS fielded a typically well-balanced team.
Emma Torres opened with a Girls 3rd & 4th grades 1,600-meter win in 6:59.0, winning by almost 80 meters. Jared Edwards followed with a 1,600 win in the Boys 5th & 6th race. Nick Torres and Ajamo Carraby-Jones took third and fifth in the 7th & 8th grade race. Oliver Karbownik, a sixth-grader, had a very busy day, winning the 400 in 1:09.0, placing second in the Long Jump and third in the 100, while Alyma Karbownik, a fourth-grader, took second in the 400. Sydney Fullilove took a third in the Girls 7th & 8th 400 in 1:11.0. Jordan Ince finished the individual scoring on the track with a fifth in the Girls 7th & 8th 200.
Third-grader Parker Hamilton won the Boys 3rd & 4th Shot Put with a 25 feet, 3 inch toss, while another third-grade teammate, Ryan Gardner, took fifth. Sheu Maphosa was second in the Boys 5th & 6th Shot Put, breaking 30 feet with the 6-pound ball. Sydney Fullilove struck again with a fifth place. And it was Alyma Karbownik again as she won the Long Jump with a 9-foot, 6-inch leap. Emma Torres scored fourth in the TurboJav in her age group and Maxwell Ince’s 48-foot, 11-inches held up for fifth in the Boys 3rd & 4th TurboJav.
Sheu Maphosa unleashed a 91-feet, 7-inch throw to take first in the Boys 5th & 6th TurboJav, while his younger brother, Taona, threw 83 feet, 6 inches for third. Ty Cross’ 105-feet, 4-inch toss was good for second at the Boys 7th & 8th level. Harold Fullilove, a fifth-grader, improved to fifth-place in the Long Jump.
The OLS finished the job with additional contributions from Nicholas Scantlebury, Gwen Oakley, Ella Scantlebury, Aryan Sabnekar Olivia Ince, Victoria Saint-Preux, Nyla Edwards, Teresa Pollard and Charlotte Marian.
OLS will host the 19th Annual Our Lady of Sorrows Track and Field Invitational on May 7. There are high hopes of regaining the championship that OLS last won in 2006.
