LIVINGSTON – The South Orange/Maplewood Cougars 9U travel baseball team defeated a good squad from Livingston to advance to championship game of the New Providence Green League (9U).
The Cougars pounded out 18 hits in the game with multiple-hit games from Luke Bailey, Aaron Budd, Max Drechsler, Elijah Hall, Lincoln Kessler, Alex Mandell, Luca Sieger and Alex Szczepanski. Bailey and Sieger each had three RBIs, and Mateo Nealon contributed a key RBI to get the team rolling in the 17-6 win.
Mandell, Raphi Hall and Riordan Pickett combined on a three-hitter, striking out 10 along the way. Will Walsh made a lunging grab in left field with the bases loaded to kill a Livingston rally, giving the momentum back to the Cougars.
It was the most complete game played by the Cougars, one in which every player contributed.
The team closes out its season with the championship game on Friday, July 29. Their opponent will be determined in the semi-final to be played on Wednesday.
The 9U Cougars posted a 9-1-1 record during the regular season. Win or lose on Friday, this season has been a dramatic turnaround for a team that went 2-11 last year.
