East Orange Campus HS football team to host West Orange in playoff semifinals

Damon Phillips scores all three TDs and tops 1,000 rushing yards on the season

EAST ORANGE, NJ — In one of the most intriguing playoff matchups in the area, the top-seeded and undefeated East Orange Campus High School football team will host fourth-seeded West Orange in the semifinals of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, North Jersey, Section 1, Group 5, playoffs at Paul Robeson Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m.

The Jaguars defeated No. 8 seed Elizabeth, 21-7, on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 6, to improve to a 9-0 overall record on the season. Damon Phillips rushed for 234 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries to lead the Jaguars. He also scored the other TD on a reception. Phillips eclipsed 1,000 yards on the season.

After a scoreless first quarter, Phillips ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Later in the quarter, Phillips caught a 15-yard scoring pass from quarterback Raeden Oliver.

In the fourth quarter, Phillips had a 50-yard TD run. Gerald Gibson kicked all three extra points.

Oliver finished 5-of-7 passing for 123 yards. BJ Covington had three catches for 65 yards for EOCHS.

Ahmad Nalls had 15 tackles, including four tackles for loss and Moungue Nyame had 10 tackles and four sacks to lead the Jaguars’ defense.

West Orange topped No. 5 seed Westfield, 28-14, on Friday night, Nov. 5, to raise its record to 7-3 overall this season. 

The other semifinal pits No. 3 seed Passaic County Tech at No. 2 seed Ridgewood.

East Orange Campus defeated West Orange, 21-14, at Robeson Stadium on Sept. 24 in week 4 in a Super Football Conference–Freedom Red Division game. 

East Orange Campus and West Orange have met each season since 2009. In 13 meetings in that span, West Orange leads the series, 7-6, but East Orange has won four of the past five meetings. West Orange won last season’s meeting.
