Seton Hall Prep basketball team opens season with exciting win over Immaculate Conception of Montclair

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The Seton Hall Prep varsity basketball team opened the 2017-18 season with a very exciting 61-58 victory over Immaculate Conception from Montclair at the 18th annual Hoop Group NJ Tip-Off Showcase at Mount Saint Dominic’s Mary J. Codey Gymnasium on Friday.

Leading 26-25 at halftime, the Pirates dominated in the third quarter as junior guard Ashton Miller and senior forward Alex Imegwu each scored 10 points to extend their lead to 46-36. Immaculate came back in the fourth quarter to take a 58-57 lead with 2:20 left. Senior guard Jonah Benitez made one of two free throws with 1:22 left to give the Pirates a 59-58 lead and made one of two free throws to extend the lead to 60-58 with :39.2 left. Miller made one of two free throws with :01.4 to make the final 61-58.

Miller, selected the Player of the Game, finished with a career-high 21 points with 8 rebounds. Imegwu scored 14 points with 7 rebounds; sophomore guard Jabri Abdur-Rahim scored 15 points with 10 rebounds, junior guard Geordan Walker scored 8 points while Jesse Reid pulled down 4 rebounds and dished out 5 assists.

Following the game, Miller said, “we are going to have to have a real ‘team’ effort like tonight all season in order to win games against the tough competition we play in our league, county, and states.” Imegwu added, “Our guys off the bench did a real nice job and we rebounded well against Immaculate throughout the game which helped a great deal.” Head Coach Kevin Williams commented, “We played some tough defense, had a lot of key rebounds, and some nice foul shots down the stretch (7-10 in the fourth quarter) for the team victory.”
