WEST ORANGE, NJ — The Seton Hall Prep basketball team went 2-1 to improve its record to 4-5 on the season.
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Pirates traveled to Payne Tech in Newark and lost 44-42. Junior guard Giye Jenkins, a West Orange resident, led the team with 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals, while senior guard Gary Hinds scored eight points with seven rebounds and senior guard Mason Morial scored seven points with eight rebounds and five steals.
On Thursday, Jan. 9, in their home opener, the Pirates defeated Montclair, 62-43. Jenkins led the team again with 16 points, six assists and three steals, while Hinds scored 11 points with four assists and junior 6-4 forward Cole McGonigal had eight points. Morial added six rebounds, six assists and three steals to the victory.
On Saturday, Jan. 11, the Pirates traveled to the Thomas G. Dunn Sports Center to participate in the Elizabeth Minuteman Classic against Union Catholic. The Pirates came from behind with a strong defensive effort in the second half to defeat the Vikings 55-44. Trailing 29-27 at the half, Seton Hall outscored Union Catholic 17-9 in the third quarter to take a 44-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. Senior guard Zander Zebrowski led the scoring in the quarter with seven points, while senior guard Mike Curran scored five points. For the game, Jenkins scored 16 points with five rebounds, five assists and six steals, while Zebrowski finished with 13 points and Curran had 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Hinds had six rebounds and four assists in the victory.
