WEST ORANGE, NJ – The Seton Hall Prep varsity basketball team will begin the season on Friday, Dec. 16, at Newark East Side at 4 p.m. The Pirates then will participate in the Hoop Group Tip-Off on Saturday, Dec. 17, at Caldwell University when the team faces Columbia at 8:30 p.m.
The Pirates last season won the Essex County Tournament title for the second year in a row to extend their record of ECT titles to 17; won the Super Essex Conference-American Division title; and reached the NJSIAA Non-Public North Jersey “A” tournament final where they lost to Don Bosco Prep to finish with a sensational 29-2 record.
SHP, under head coach Kevin Williams, lost several players to graduation, including guard TJ Gibbs, who is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,987 points and is continuing his career at the University of Notre Dame.
The key returning players for SHP are senior 6-foot-4 forward Treyvon Bennett, senior 6-3 guard Austin Williams, and junior Alex Imegwu, who was injured in January and missed the remainder of last season, but has great potential. A top newcomer is Jabri Abdur-Rahim, who is ranked as the No. 1 freshman in the country.
