Seton Hall Prep cross-country team takes second at SEC-American Division Championships

WEST ORANGE, NJ (updated Friday Oct. 7, 10:00 a.m.) – In the highly competitive varsity race, the Seton Hall Prep  cross-country team fought hard to a second-place finish behind Columbia High School at the Super Essex Conference-American Division Championships on Oct. 5 at Branch Brook Park in Newark.

The top five scorers for the Pirates were Malik Kosanovich, fourth place, 16:08; Dan Gizzo, sixth place,  16:24;  Mike DiDonato, 11th place, 16:52; Jack McCarthy, 23rd place; and Sean Theoclitus, 26th place. All five set personal records.

The top seven were rounded out by Matt Martins, 17:59; and  Ben Groppe, 18:26, who both set personal records for Branch Brook.

SHP’s team average of 16:56 is its fastest at Branch Brook since the SEC was formed in 2009, said SHP head coach Chris Barnitt  Additionally, Kosanovich’s mark puts him in the top 10 of Branch Brook’s fastest times and the fastest from SHP since the creation of the SEC, added Barnitt.  Gizzo and DiDonato comfortably broke into the top 50 fastest.

West Orange High School was led by senior Derek Lim, who took 18th in 17:08.2, and junior Ebizie Anuamadi, 29th, 17:46.9. The WOHS boys finished seventh among the 10 scoring teams.

On the girls’ side, sophomore Alina Chant finished ninth overall in 20:51.0 to lead WOHS.
