Seton Hall Prep wrestling team finishes runner-up in Non-Public ‘A’ North to finish 19-1; gears up for District tournament

 

The Seton Hall Prep wrestling team completed its dual meeting portion of its schedule with a 19-1 record.

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, in the Non-Public “A” North Jersey semifinal round, the second-seeded Pirates hosted third-seeded St. Peter’s Prep of Jersey City and defeated them, 36-21, in come-from behind fashion. Trailing 21-15 after the 126-pound weight class, SHP won the last five bouts to clinch the match. At 132 pounds, Charlie Cunningham won 6-3; at 138, Jack Wilt won 6-0, at 145, Maguire Pecci won 6-5; at 152, Michael Massa pinned in 3:56; and Danny Young pinned at 160 at 3:28 to close out the comeback.

On Friday, Feb. 9, they hosted fourth-seeded Bergen Catholic and lost 58-9 in the Non-Public “A” North final. Head Coach Jack Decker completed his ninth year and his current dual meet record is 137-64.

SHP will now prepare for the NJSIAA District 13 tournament at Scotch Plains High School on Saturday, Feb. 17. Their probable lineup will be:

106: Sophomore Larry Melchionda, 26-5 record.

113: Freshman Conner Decker, 26-6.

120: Sophomore Dean Musialowicz, 12-16.

126: Freshman Cole Carroll, 16-14.

132: Senior  Charlie Cunningham, 28-4.

138: Senior  Maguire Pecci, 16-2.

145: Freshman  Jack Wilt, 19-12.

152: Sophomore Michael Massa, 24-7.

160: Senior  Danny Young, 23-7.

170: Sophomore: Alex Garcia, 23-6.

182:  Sophomore Zach Merlino, 20-12.

195: Senior  Ben Halligan, 9-13.

220: Freshman  John Donnelly, 1-0.

285: Junior  Niko Diakides, 24-7.
