Seton Hall Prep football team falls to Pope John

 

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The Seton Hall Prep varsity football traveled to Sparta to take on Pope John XXIII and lost, 19-7, Saturday, Oct. 1, to fall to an 0-4 record.

In the first quarter following a Pope John punt, the Pirates went 57 yards in 10 plays with junior receiver Andrew Perez going around left end for a 4-yard touchdown run. The big plays during the drive were passes to senior receiver Justin Dodson for 25 yards and senior receiver Matt Durborow for 21 yards by quarterback Matt Colantuono. Perez scored with 12.2 seconds left in the quarter. Sophomore Zach Hoban added the extra point.

Pope John scored a touchdown to tie it 7-7 with 5:29 left in the second quarter. Pope John scored another touchdown with 10:08 left in the third quarter, but senior Michael Mughetto blocked the extra point to keep it 13-7.

Pope John scored later in the quarter. The extra-point pass failed to make the final score 19-7.

Receiving: Senior receiver Dwayne Warren, 72 yards.

Defense: Senior linebacker Paul Theobald, 15 tackles. Sophomore LB Jonathon Alvarado, 10 tackles. Defensive back Michael Mughetto, seven tackles, one blocked extra point. Junior tackle Johnathon Weir, five tackles, one interception.

Next game: The Pirates will host Delbarton on Friday, Oct. 7, at West Orange High School’s Joe Suriano Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
