WEST ORANGE, NJ – On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Seton Hall Prep football team traveled down Park Avenue to Paul Robeson Stadium to take on East Orange Campus HS and defeated the Jaguars 20-14 for their third consecutive victory to improve to 3-2. This is the first time since 2015 that the Pirates have won three straight games.
Early in the second quarter on fourth down Vincent Henrich broke through the line and blocked an East Orange punt and Andrew Mitzak picked the ball up and scored from 30 yards out and with Austin Kuterka’s extra point gave the Pirates a 7-0 lead just 23 seconds into the quarter. On their next drive, East Orange drove all the way to the Seton Hall 2-yard line when Foster Bryant caused an East Orange fumble and he also recovered the fumble. The score remained the same into halftime.
On Seton Hall’s first drive of the third quarter they drove 66 yards in 5 plays as Aidan Gilman scored on a 34-yard run to give the Pirates a 13-0 lead. East Orange scored on their next drive as Nasir Montgomery scored on a 35-yard run but the extra point was wide right and the score was 13-6 with 5:35 to go in the third quarter.
On their next drive, Gilman found Giye Jenkins on a 32-yard scoring pass and Kuterka added the extra point to extend the Pirates’ lead to 20-6 with 1:51 left in the third quarter.
On the next Jaguars drive, they drove 67 yards in 7 plays with Montgomery hitting Mahjid Means-Terrell on a 22-yard scoring pass and Montgomery hitting Kashim Daniels with the conversion pass to make the score 20-14 with 11:49 left in the fourth quarter.
Later in the quarter, East Orange drove to the Seton Hall 42-yard line when Ryan Monteleone intercepted a Montgomery pass for the second time to snuff out a Jaguar scoring chance and Seton Hall ran out the final 4:43.
Following the game, Monteleone, who was playing his first game back after an injury kept him out of the previous three games, said, “It was incredible to be out there with the guys. Glad I can help the team to the victory and I look forward to the rest of the season and keep winning.”
Sophomore wide receiver Giye Jenkins, on his catch, said, “As I ran down the sideline I looked up and Aidan put the ball right there for me. I am really excited about the victory.”
Sophomore running back Nazeer Elias, playing in his first Seton Hall Prep game (17 carries for 66 yards) said, “I am very excited to play for Seton Hall Prep. Late in the game as we were trying to run out the clock I was trying to make first downs and I did.”
Junior running back Xavier Lewis (8 carries for 33 yards) added, “I wanted to do my best filling in for the injured Luca D’Emilio and I think I did.”
NOTES: The series vs. East Orange Campus stands at 12-3 for Seton Hall Prep and this is the first meeting since 2015. Statistics for the game are: Quarterback Gilman: 5 of 10 passing, 85 yards, 1 TD; 9 carries for 57 yards. Defense: Bryant: 12 tackles 1 caused fumble, 1 fumble recovered. Tyler Cook: 11 tackles. Henrich: 9 tackles and 1 blocked punt. Monteleone: 7 tackles and 2 interceptions. East Orange Campus-Montgomery: 17 of 23 186 yards, 1 TD, 2 interceptions; 17 carries for 96 yards, 1 TD; Means-Terrell: 7 catches for 74 yards, 1 TD.
Seton Hall will host Montclair on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field in West Orange.
