Seton Hall Prep grad Rick Porcello wins American League Cy Young award

Rick Porcello, a 2007 Seton Hall Prep graduate, was voted as the American League Cy Young Award winner for the 2016 Major League Baseball season.

The award is given to the best pitcher in the AL.

Porcello, a 27-year-old right-hander for the Boston Red Sox, led MLB in both wins (22) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.906). The Chester native struck out 189 batters and had a 3.15 earned run average. He pitched a career-high 223 innings.

Porcello received eight first-place votes, but received several second-place votes to edge Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers, who had 14 first-place votes.

In his senior year at SHP, Porcello led the Pirates to a 32-1 record, including the Greater Newark Tournament title, NJSIAA Non-Public “A” North Jersey title and NJSIAA Non-Public “A” New Jersey title. He pitched a perfect game in the GNT semifinals against Newark Academy that year.

Porcello was selected in the first round by the Detroit Tigers following his senior year at SHP in the 2007 MLB Draft and made his MLB debut with the Tigers two years later.
