Seton Hall Prep hockey team splits two games during week

WEST ORANGE – The Seton Hall Prep varsity ice hockey team went 1-1 this past week to raise its record to 3-9-3 on the season.

On Thursday, Jan. 28, the Pirates traveled to the Secaucus Ice Rink and lost to St. Peter’s Prep of Jersey City, 2-1. SHP opened the scoring with 12:20 left in the second period on an unassisted goal by sophomore Stephen Buck.

St. Peter’s Prep tied it with 8:24 left in the third period. St.Peter’s Prep scored the tiebreaking goal with 2:51 remaining. SHP junior goalie Jack McConeghy made 27 saves.

The following night, the Pirates defeated Gloucester Catholic, 3-0, at Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange. Senior forward Jack Rutter scored on assists by sophomore defenseman Jake Sandomeno and Buck with 10:23 left in the second period. Buck scored on an assist by senior defenseman Alexander Cautela with 5:24 remaining in the second.

Freshman forward Thomas Colucci scored an empty-net goal with :01 left in the game. McConeghy had 19 saves for his second shutout of the season. SHP out-shot Gloucester Catholic, 25-19.
