Seton Hall Prep hockey team tops St. Joseph of Montvale to reach State tournament quarterfinals

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The sixth-seeded Seton Hall Prep varsity ice hockey team improved to 12-7-5 with a 4-3 win over No. 11 seed St. Joseph of Montvale at Codey Arena in the Non-Public round of 16 State Tournament match on Feb. 21.

St. Joseph scored in the first period to take a 1-0 lead after the first period. Seton Hall Prep scored the next three goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead before St. Joseph scored a goal late in the second period to cut the SHP lead to 3-2. Thomas Colucci scored a power-play goal on an assist by Jake Sandomeno; John O’Hern scored on an assist by Colucci; and Liam Carroll scored a power-play goal on assists by Colucci and Phil Feinberg.

In the third period, St. Joseph tied up the match at 3-3 with 7:00 left. The Pirates scored the go-ahead goal on a power play when Stephen Buck took a pass from JP Foley and took a shot that deflected off of the defensemen and over the goalie’s head with 1:48 left.

SHP will play in the quarterfinal round against third-seeded Christian Brothers Academy at the Jersey Shore Ice Arena on Monday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
