WEST ORANGE, NJ — The Seton Hall Prep basketball team won two games last week to raise its record to 6-1 and is currently on a four-game winning streak.
On Tuesday, Feb. 16, the Pirates hosted Payne Tech and defeated the Lions 61-44. Trailing 23-22 at the half, Seton Hall took control of the game, outscoring Payne Tech 19-7 to take a 41-30 lead after the third quarter.
Senior Bedes Osuala led the scoring with 8 points in the quarter and the game with 12 points. Junior Gavin Kreitz scored 10 points with four rebounds, four assists and three steals, while senior Giye Jenkins and junior Nick Dunneman each scored 8 points. Junior Myles Thomason had eight assists while junior Elijah Garris pulled down 10 rebounds.
On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Pirates hosted the Phoenix from University High School and defeated them 47-40. The Pirates used a stifling defense to create turnovers and fast-break buckets. The Pirates never trailed from the opening tip, and they were able to get out to the early lead in large part thanks to the rim protection of 6-foot-7 sophomore center Darrius Phillips. Three first-quarter blocks by Phillips led to transition points on each occasion for Seton Hall Prep.
“Darrius took a big step up,” head coach Kevin Williams said after the game. “He has always had it in him, but it has taken him a while to get in the flow and pace of varsity action.”
“Our main focus going in was to take care of the ball, take good shots and play great defense,” said Jenkins, who had 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals for the game. “Our whole mindset going into the season was to really appreciate each day and just come into work knowing that this is not guaranteed.”
Phillips finished with six rebounds and three blocks while Osuala finished with a team high of 13 points, four rebounds and three steals. Dunneman had 9 points with four rebounds, while Thomason had 6 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
