Seton Hall Prep ice hockey team enjoys 2-0 week

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The Seton Hall Prep ice hockey team went 2-0 last week to improve to 3-1 on the season.

On Monday, Dec. 3, the Pirates  hosted St. Augustine at Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange and won, 3-0, behind freshman goalie Jake Schunke’s 14 saves as he posted his first high school shutout.

Following the match, Schunke said, “It felt good to get the shutout. The team really helped me. The team made it easy for me as they were blocking shots and backchecking. The upperclassmen and the coaches really welcomed me into Seton Hall Prep. High school hockey is a lot faster and the pace is at a real high level than club hockey that I played in grammer school.”

Thomas Colucci opened the scoring with a power-play goal on an assist by Anthony Martine with 9:38 left in the second period. Just 1:30 later, Christopher Kelly scored on an assist by Ryan Rodrigues to make the score 2-0. Colucci closed out the scoring with another power-play goal on assists by Phil Feinberg and Ryan Kemp with 7:23 left in the second period. Seton Hall outshot St. Augustine 40-14.

On Friday, Dec. 7, the Pirates traveled to the Flyers Skate Zone in Pennsauken and defeated Bishop Eustace, 6-3. The Pirates led 2-1 after the first period on goals by Colucci, assisted by Kemp, and Harrison Rocheville, assisted by Kelly and Brendan Waivada. In the second period, Bishop Eustace scored twice while Seton Hall scored with 4:33 left as Colucci connected on assists by Feinberg and Kemp to make the score 3-3 after two periods.

In the third period, Kemp scored a power-play goal on an assist by Feinberg to make the score 4-3. Waivada scored on assists by JP Foley and James Gabriel, increasing the lead to 5-3, and Kemp closed out the scoring with 2:47 left on Feinberg’s third assist of the night. Seton Hall outshot Bishop Eustace 52-11.
