Seton Hall Prep ice hockey team shows good efforts

WEST ORANGE – The Seton Hall Prep varsity ice hockey team gave good efforts despite going 0-3-1 last week to move to a 3-12-4 record.

The Pirates lost a tough game to Bergen Catholic, 2-1, Feb. 1, at Richard J. Codey Arena in West Orange. Bergen Catholic scored in the second period before sophomore forward Devon Dobres tied the match at 1-1 on assists by freshman forward Thomas Colucci and senior defenseman Alexander Cautela with 4:33 left in the third period. Bergen Catholic scored the go-ahead goal 50 seconds later. SHP junior goalie Jack McConeghy had 15 saves. SHP outshot BC, 22-17.

The Pirates battled to a 3-3 tie with Randolph at Aspen Arena in Randolph on Feb. 3. Randolph led 1-0 after the first period before sophomore forward Stephen Buck scored in the second period on an assist by Colucci to tie the match at 1-1 after two periods. Early in the third period, Randolph scored to take a 2-1 lead before Colucci scored an unassisted power-play goal with 3:47 left. Colucci added another power-play goal 40 seconds later on assists by senior defenseman Hunter D’Avella and Buck to give SHP a 3-2 lead. Randolph tied the match with 39 seconds left. McConeghy had 31 saves.

SHP lost to Don Bosco Prep, 3-1, Feb. 5 at Codey Arena. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Pirates tied it on a goal by Buck with an assist by Colucci. DBP scored a goal later in the second period and added another goal in the third period. McConeghy had 22 saves.

The Pirates lost to Bishop Eustace, 3-0, Feb. 6 at Codey Arena in a make-up game from Jan. 19. SHP out-shot Bishop Eustace, 22-17.

The 58th Gordon Cup Ice Hockey Tournament was scheduled to be seeded on Feb. 9.
