Seton Hall Prep soccer team improves to 12-1-1

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The Seton Hall Prep varsity soccer team had another great week, going 2-0-1 to raise its record to 12-1-1.

On Monday afternoon, Oct. 2, the Pirates hosted Columbia at Brendan P. Tevlin Memorial Field and welcomed back junior goalie Liam Bertrand, who was injured opening day against Summit. SHP won, 1-0, behind a goal by senior defenseman Max Engelbrechtsen with 20:06 left in the first half on assists by senior midfielder Nick Kriak and senior defenseman Jason Gomes. Bertrand had six saves. For Columbia, junior goalie Sam Maidenberg played great in goal with eight saves.

On Wednesday, Oct. 4, the Pirates hosted Millburn and defeated them, 2-0. Bertrand had four saves to record his second consecutive clean sheet. Junior forward Skyler Storms scored with 14:39 left in the second half on an assist by senior defenseman Rocco Capozza, and senior defenseman Adam Silva made the score 2-0 with an unassisted goal with :58 left in the match.

On Friday, Oct. 6, the Pirates hosted Kearny, one of the top teams in the state. They played to a 2-2 tie in an outstanding game. Kearny took a 1-0 lead on a free kick with 8:03 left in the first half. SHP tied the score at 1-1 when sophomore forward Aidan Dunphy took as pass from Gomes and scored with 3:31 left in the first half. Dunphy scored just 1:07 later when he went down the right side and shot a rocket into the upper left corner of the goal to give SHP a 2-1 lead. Kearny tied the score in the second half on a penalty kick.
